Cyanuric Acid (CYA) can be defined as a chlorine stabiliser or sunscreen for swimming pools. CYA prevents the ultraviolet rays from the sun burning off the chlorine, therefore allowing chlorine to remain in the pool water for longer.
The ideal CYA levels are between 30-50 ppm for a non salt water generated pool and between 70-80 ppm for a salt water generated pool.
If the CYA levels become too high, it will work in reverse by masking the chlorine, therefore limiting the effect of the chlorine and causing your pool to turn green. CYA levels increase when using stabilised chlorine products such as dichlor or trichlor tablets.
Unfortunately, the only way to lower CYA levels is to drain a portion of the pool water, and refilling the pool with fresh water.
